The northern and southern states all merged

The United States of America is a union of states. The northern and southern states all merged and came up with a central government but all states could still run their economies independently. New Mexico is one of these states but Mexico is not. Mexico is a different nation altogether and passports needed for mexico citizens who wish to travel to United States of America. The border stretches from Texas through New Mexico, Arizona to California. This is a very long stretch to cover for the border patrol. There are many illegal immigrants in who have used these to their advantage. Due to the harsh terrain involved and open border line using the coast many have succeeded but many too have been caught trying to cross.
